The day where I woke up at 04:30 and caught the most amazing sunrise in Bali!
Honestly, the call time just gets earlier and earlier! First, it was Laughter Yoga at Alila Ubud at 06:00; then we have Divine Healing with Alila Seminyak at 07:00; and now, Chasing Sunrise with Alila Manggis at 05:00.
I’m hardly a morning person; so I was surprised that I actually managed to pull myself out from the bed.
Alila Experience | Chasing the Sunrise
Met up with the others in the lobby at 05:00, and took the jukung (a traditional wooden boat) out to the ocean to catch the first ray of light. If I’m not mistaken, the sun rises at some time between 06:00 to 06:30.
Blessed with gorgeous panoramic views, Bali’s eastern coast is a popular destination among tourists seeking to catch the most amazing sunrises and sunsets.
Having seen a couple of sunsets in Bali, this is, in fact, my first time catching the sunrise in Bali.
The experience was truly amazing, and I’m so glad we went for this Alila Experience. Heading out to the ocean in complete darkness, seeing the first ray of sunlight, the golden glow on the water… It was beautiful and mesmerising! We went out at 05:00 when the sky is still in complete darkness, and it was a relatively long journey. I believe it must have taken us an hour or so to finally reached the spot to catch the sunrise. To give you an idea how far we went; we even caught sight of the Gili islands.
I was expecting it to be cold in the morning, but the weather didn’t turn out to be as chilly as what I had thought. It was cooling but not freezing. I wore a lightweight jacket, and it was sufficient to block out the wind. At some point, the wave was pretty intense, so the boat became quite shaky, and we ended up getting water splashed on us.
While the jukung appears to be huge from the outside, in actual fact, the width was just enough to sit one person. We were able to sit five in one boat. When seated, the boat barely reached the height of our waist.
Sad to say, I didn’t do well on the boat ride and ended up puking multiple times on the return journey. Still, witnessing the sunrise in the middle of the ocean makes it all worthwhile.
If you’re visiting Alila Manggis, I highly recommend you to give this a try. Price for this Alila Experience (Chasing the Sunrise) is at IDR 675,000 ++ per person, and it includes a gourmet picnic box. Wish I could tell you what’s in the picnic box, but I didn’t end up seeing or enjoying the food. I was feeling so sick on the return journey that I was either puking or trying not to puke. Made the mistake of not preparing motion sickness pills before going on this trip. So if you’re going, do prepare some.
